Elementary School

Kindergarten – 5th Grade

Access Possibility School easy to useAt APS students from Kindergarten through 5th grade can choose full year enrollment,  ½ year enrollment, tutoring and/or after school activities. Students from anywhere around the world may participate in our school, although the academic programs will be based on Texas state curriculum standards for math, language arts/reading, science, social studies, the arts, health/physical education, and technology.

At the elementary level students will participate in an all inclusive curriculum using an interdisciplinary approach to learning. Curriculum is developmentally and age appropriate and students have the option of working at different grade levels in various subjects based on their their developmental needs. For instance, a second grade student may work at a 4th grade math level if that is what is appropriate for that particular child.

As part of a student’s daily schedule they may interact with a teacher and other students through a virtual classroom, with all classes being recorded to allow students to view again as needed. The teacher also has the option to put the kids into smaller groups, called Break Out Rooms, so they can talk to each other and share their work. Kids work on group projects as they learn to share ideas, collaborate, solve problems, and practice social skills. We have a white board that kids and teachers can use to write, practice skills, draw, and play games. It can be used to post live videos, chat with others, move between different online classrooms and more. It’s an exciting place to work and play!

In addition the children will participate in a variety of online learning activities that are accessed through a learning community. Parents and students have access to all state standards, curricula information, grades, assessments, projects, and activities,  within the learning community. Teachers post assignments, videos, links, games, projects, and adventures. Students can also post finished assignments, develop online galleries, blogs, and post videos and mp3s.

Our teachers customize learning for their students, while meeting the curriculum standards. For example, if a 1st or 2nd grade student’s primary interest is all about bugs and insects, then their reading, math, science and social studies requirements could be met through the study of bugs.  This instruction could be a combination of online virtual classroom study with other like-minded peers, doing group projects, reading books about bugs, spelling the names of different kinds of bugs, experiential lessons from the student’s back yard, counting bugs, learning about how bugs are made (with skeleton on the outside, as opposed to us, with skeleton on the inside), etc.

We recognize that kids learn differently and they love to learn. At APS kids and parents can design their learning around their individual needs and interests. Some students may work better in a group, others may prefer more face-to-face classroom time with a teacher, and others enjoy working independently on assignments. Students have the ability to delve into topics that excite them and use time productively to move ahead at their own pace.

Curriculum will be presented in ways that facilitate learning by children who might not learn in the ways that are traditionally taught in most schools.  We know from years of experience working with kids in a variety of capacities – workshops, private sessions, camps, and schools – the importance of meeting kids where they are and teaching them in ways that are easier for them to learn.

Middle School

6th – 8th Grades

At APS students from 6th grade through 8th grade can choose full year enrollment,  ½ year enrollment, one or more single subjects (for example: Math;  Math and Science;) tutoring and/or after school activities. Students from anywhere around the world may participate in our school, although the academic programs will be based on Texas state curriculum standards for math, language arts/reading, science, social studies, the arts, health/physical education, and technology.

At the middle school level, curriculum is designed around core subject areas using an interdisciplinary approach to learning. Our teachers are specialists in their subject areas and create curriculum to comply with state educational standards and at the same time they create flexibility in lessons to meet the individual needs of each student.

Students will be part of an interactive community of learners through a virtual classroom. The virtual classroom is a leading edge, multi-dimensional, virtual environment that transforms virtual training and virtual learning from passive listening to active, personalized learning.  Students interact with teachers and each other in groups and one-on-one. They have the ability to work together creating projects, sharing multimedia presentations, peer coaching, and so much more. Teachers may group kids who excel in a particular subject area with kids who struggle. Students learn to become leaders, they learn about kindness, they learn about gifting and receiving. By putting kids together to work on a project as a group they learn to make friends and practice social skills that are so important developmentally.

In addition children will participate in a variety of online learning activities using a cutting edge, user friendly, interactive learning platform where students have access to assignments, projects, videos, assessments, feedback, video conferencing, podcasts and many other types of learning opportunities. It makes online learning exciting, easy and fun!

We recognize that kids learn differently and they love to learn. At APS kids and parents can design their learning around their individual needs and interests. Have you ever wondered where the schools are that inspire, excite and encourage our kids to step beyond what even they thought was possible?  Places where teachers ignite a sense of wonder and stimulate questions and encourage students to play? You have found it at the Access Possibilities School!

High School

9th – 12th grade

We are in the process of developing our High School curriculum.  We will offer 9th grade classes for students beginning in the 2016-2017 school year.

More information to follow.

Extracurricular Activities

Extracurricular activities are an integral part of a child’s educational program. They offer opportunities for social and emotional growth as well as the opportunity to learn new skills and enhance existing talents and abilities. Activities provide an alternative educational experience that address students’ learning styles, talents, and differences.

Children may choose to participate in an activity to learn something new, to broaden their knowledge of the world, connect with new people, or expand their creativity. Activities are designed to allow children to go outside their comfort zone and then move beyond, becoming more aware in the process.

English/Language Arts/Reading

Our younger students explore letters and play with sounds and learn how words are formed. They discover the joy and the magic of literature through story reading and story telling.  The skills of phonics, spelling, comprehension and sequencing, for example, are taught by the use of story reading, story telling and illustrations.

Older students build skills in reading, comprehension, spelling, grammar, writing and literature using a variety of story genres.  Students are asked to choose the genres that excite them.  By letting them choose the books they would like to read, improvement and development of reading and writing skills becomes easier and a lot more fun.

Our students explore the power of language.  We  look at how the use of words and grammar can affect and change the course of history. For example, Mahalia Jackson whispered six words on stage to Martin Luther King, “Tell them about the dream, Martin”.  These words were the inspiration for Martin Luther King’s famous speech, “I Have A Dream”, which, it can be argued, did change the course of history.  It is these connections to history and to our daily life and culture that help to bring our English/Language Arts/Reading classes alive.

We tap into the capacities that our students have for creativity and storytelling, story/script writing, writing articles, reviews, poetry and so much more more.   Are they better with audiobooks and with recording their thoughts than they are with reading and writing? Do they prefer to watch or to see a story enacted rather than reading about it?  What capacities do they have with language arts that perhaps they are not even aware of?  Our teachers encourage our students to discover and explore their talents and abilities and capacities with all of that and so much more.

Math

We teach math to students in ways that spark their interest. At each grade level, students will work at their skill level to develop proficiency with numbers, beginning with counting, addition and subtraction and moving all the way to algebra, geometry, calculus and trigonometry.

Our math program provides students with real life applications in fun and creative ways. Teachers use examples of how the math that is being taught can be used in our daily lives. We look, for example, at the use of math in cooking, in building, in money, in navigating with a map. Where math may not have been fun or exciting in the past, students become eager to learn more as they create businesses, build projects that require knowledge of angles and manage their money.

Some students might be more interested in learning about the history of math and about famous mathematicians. Others might prefer to learn how math is used in science, medicine and technology. And still other students might have a more experiential approach to learning math. For example they might like to build something, using their math skills.

Social Studies

Our Social Studies program builds a foundation for our students in history, geography, economics, government, culture, technology, science, societies and so much more. For example, our students can examine current events and identify ways to affect a change in the world right now. They can choose areas of interest to study such as culture, which would include the study of art, food, dance, and literature. Those who are interested in science could study farming, climate, natural disasters, etc. Students who have an interest in math can explore the economy, business, and industry. And children who are excited by technology might study transportation and communication.

Access Possibilities School has a global presence, which allows our students to connect with peers who come from different cultures, have different experiences and different perspectives. Students engage in practical, hands-on projects that help them learn about the world in ways that are unique and fun.  By encouraging and nurturing their ideas, regardless of their age, kids get the sense that they have the power to affect the change they would like to see in the world.

Science

For our younger students, school science covers physical science, earth science and life science. It’s all about the investigation and exploration of organisms, space, the earth, motion, matter, energy, the environment, and so much more.

For older students, the study expands to include aquatic science, astronomy, biology, chemistry, earth and space sciences, physics and environmental science.

Our students will be encouraged to ask questions so that they have a sense of the future that’s being created on the Earth right now. At Access Possibilities School, we are interested in what it takes to create a sustainable future on Earth, and how we can contribute to that.

Performing Arts

What? No live theater? Online performing arts classes? How is that possible?

Thanks to our virtual classroom, our performing arts classes are amazing!  Kids from all around the world can participate together, creating and being seen and being heard, on line!

For example, students can interact with each other doing radio shows, and then play around with editing voices, adding sound effects, cutting, splicing, etc.  Or perhaps they choose to make a film, shooting it in different locations and editing it together as a class. Script writing workshops could include brainstorming ideas, creating together and then animating.  Kids can share their creations or performances through Vine, Facebook, or YouTube.

Our approach to the Performing Arts is unique at APS.  We use many of the tools of one of the signature classes of Access Consciousness, Right Voice for You.  These tools are designed to make it possible for people to have the courage to create, to be on stage and perform, to be vulnerable and open to an audience, and to choose beyond all their self-imposed judgments, into the space of being who they actually are.  Children are empowered to make choices, take risks, share ideas, ask questions, collaborate and become more aware of how they create.

The tools are incredibly effective in assisting kids with their creative process, whether it be character development, acting, musical theatre, script writing, directing, puppet making, dancing, costumes, lighting and more.

Fine Arts

Access Possibilities School ArtAt Access Possibilities School, we approach Fine Arts from many different perspectives, including art, music, dance and performing arts (see above.)

Students are encouraged to create original artworks from a variety of media, such as drawing, painting and printmaking, using a variety of materials, to name but a few. They explore colors, forms, lines, and textures.

Students study the history of art and culture through time. For example, they might study the Renaissance, which was an historical period in which great art and  architecture flourished. And, they also study what’s new and creative and exciting today. Who and what’s on the creative edge of the Art World?

We encourage students to use art in other subject areas. For example, in a science class, students could look at the chemistry of the pigments of different colors and types of paints in their artwork. We use art to enrich and engage students in other subjects such as Math and English and Social Studies.

The study of music and dance increases student academic achievement, fosters creativity,  and nurtures and develops our students. Our music program is designed to encourage creative expression, communication, collaboration and artistry.

Physical Education and Health

PE is all about learning about your body, learning about health, being physically active and interacting with peers.

We encourage our students to choose activities that are joyful and fun for them, such as playing on local sports teams, taking swim lessons, horseback riding, dancing, juggling, hiking, etc. And, we also encourage them to try out activities they have never participated in, for example, rock climbing, or orienteering, circus skills, or water skiing.

In learning about their bodies, students begin to notice how their bodies respond to different physical activities, different types of foods, amounts of sleep required, etc. We encourage them to listen to their bodies, and, to treat them well.  Students learn the connection between their body and their sense of wellbeing. Students are encouraged to nurture their bodies for optimal health.

Day in the Life of APS School

So what does a day in the life of the Access Possibilities School look like?

First, a word about our classroom.  We have a virtual classroom.  This allows us to create our classes in a variety of ways.  There will be daily interactions between students and teachers and between students and students.  The virtual classroom comes with a white board, which kids and teachers can use to write, draw and play games.  It can be used to post live videos, chat with others, move between different online classrooms and more.  Teachers are able to post assignments, videos, links, games, projects, and adventures, and students can post finished assignments, can develop online galleries, post blogs, and post videos and mp3s.

Every day, there will be online classroom time, during which teachers will provide face to face instruction to students using a variety of interactive techniques, including the white board and other online resources. In addition to being in the larger classroom, students will be able to work in small groups with their peers, as well as individually, to further their exploration of current lessons.

There is also time each day for physical activities, like horseback riding and swimming, as examples; time for activities at home that are related to school (cooking with Mom, calculating different ways of measuring ingredients, etc.); time for trips to the library; time for play; time for reading, and, so much more.
